Questions kids ask, explained by age
Nine questions children ask, each answered five times, once for each age band from 3 to 12. The answers are Pukki’s own, the ones it says out loud.
Pukki is a voice-first AI encyclopedia for kids. Pick a question to see how the same answer grows with the child, with a little more for you, questions to ask them back, and something to try together.
Sky and weather
- Why is the sky blue? The sky looks blue because the air scatters blue sunlight more than the other colors, so blue reaches your eyes from every direction.
- Where does rain come from?Rain is water that the Sun’s warmth lifted into the air as invisible vapor, which cooled into cloud droplets that joined together until they were heavy enough to fall.
- What is lightning?Lightning is a giant spark of electricity that jumps through the air when the electric charge built up inside a storm cloud grows too strong for the air to hold back.
Night
- Why does the Moon change shape? The Moon never changes shape: the Sun always lights half of it, and as the Moon circles Earth we see more or less of that bright half.
- Why do we have to sleep? We sleep because the brain and body use that time to rest, repair themselves, grow and store what was learned during the day.
- Where do dreams come from?Dreams are made by your own brain, which stays active while you sleep and weaves memories and feelings into stories, though nobody knows for certain why.
Living things
- How do fish breathe underwater?Fish breathe with gills, which take the oxygen dissolved in water and pass it into the fish’s blood as the water flows over them.
- Why do leaves change colour in autumn?Leaves change color in the fall because, as the days shorten and cool, trees stop making chlorophyll, the green in a leaf, and the yellows and oranges that were there all along show through.
How things work
- How do planes stay up in the sky?A plane stays up because its wings push air down as it moves forward, and the air pushes back up on the wings with a force called lift.
Where these answers come from
We asked Pukki each question ourselves, once for each age, on 2 October 2026. No child’s question is published here. The answers are written by AI. We read every one against a named source, and where one fell short we corrected it and marked it Edited, with what we changed and why.
Pukki’s answers vary from one asking to the next, and can be wrong. That is why each page shows its sources.
